Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds was first published by Charlton Publications in August 1956. The title would enjoy a long run until issue #48 in September 1965.

In November 1965 Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds was renamed Son Of Vulcan, but kept the sequence numbering for issue #49 and #50. With issue #51, published in March 1966, the title was renamed for the last time, to Thunderbolt and would run for ten more issues until finally folding in November 1967.

Over the years of its existence many creators were involved in Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds including: Rocco Mastroserio, Bill Molno, Charles Nicholas and Vince Alascia, but the person most associated with the title is the legendary Steve Ditko.
