The Informer was first published by Sterling Comics in April 1954. The series would run until issue #5 released in December 1954. The title was then renamed After Dark, with the sequencing continuing until folding after issue #8 published in September 1955.

The tag line for The Informer is 'From The Files Of The Police DRAGNET'. This was an attempt by the comic book to associate itself with the highly popular television and radio series, Dragnet created by Jack Webb.

An even more blatant reference to the television series was the use of a narrator, Sergeant Mark Fabian. Fabian uses language and turn of phrase that is identical to Jack Webb's character Detective Sergeant Joe Friday.
