Surprise Adventures was created as a result of the newly formed Comics Code Authority.
In July 1954 Sterling Comics debuted their new title The Tormented this ran for one more issue until, under pressure from the Comics Code Authority, the title was altered to Surprise Adventures, in March 1955 and the content toned down. The issue sequencing continued from The Tormented. The title only ran until issue #4 in July 1955.
One of the cover artists for Surprise Adventures was Michael Sekowsky and the cover for issue #3 includes a self-portrait. Sekowsky is best known for his work on DC Comics' Justice League of America and Wonder Woman.
