Nature Boy made his first appearance in Nature Boy issue #3, published by Charlton Comics in March 1956. He was created by Jerry Siegel and mainly drawn by John Buscema.

Nature Boy's alter-ego is David Crandall, who has been born into a wealthy family. When he is lost at sea, David Crandall is rescued by gods, each of whom rules over an element. These powers they pass on to the youngster.

After returning to his parents, David grows up to become Nature Boy and uses his superhuman mastery of the elements to fight crime.

Nature Boy's reign was fleeting, making his last outing just 3 issues later with issue #5 in February 1957.
